Thekkady

Think Thekkadi and immediately the signature image of a herd of elephants quietly drinking from across a lake arises in our minds. Set at an altitude of 4000-5000 feet above sea level, the wild life sanctuary at Thekkady in Idukki district is undoubtedly the nature and animal lover’s as well as the photographer’s delight. The sanctuary lies in the high ranges of the Western Ghats and is therefore clothed throughout the year in deep, dense evergreen forests. It also houses some of the rarest animals in Kerala. Thekkady also has the distinction of having the only tiger reserve in Kerala, established in the year 1978.  Ideal for trekking and hiking, the landscape of Thekkadi is also worth a visit by itself.

The unique feature of Thekkady is the lake surrounding it which was formed as a result of the construction of the Mullaperiyar dam. A boat-ride through the lake offers ideal vantage ground for watching the animals up close. Thekkady also has a very quaint old temple-the Mangala Devi temple tucked away deep in the dense woods.
