Kollam

There is a proverb about Kollam- Once you see Kollam, you won’t need your home anymore.  Once a great centre of learning and culture, Kollam soon acquired the reputation of being the trade and commercial hub of Kerala. Spices, precious stones, silk and cashew used to be exported from the ports of Kollam. The remnants of the trade remain even today; Kollam is still the cashew capital of Kerala and is also the leading fishing centre.

Today, the city is known as the gateway to the backwaters of Kerala and is a popular tourist destination. The Sasthamkotta lake which is the only major freshwater lake in Kerala today flows through this district.  Nearly one-third of Kollam lies covered by the Ashtamudi Lake.
