Idukki

Idukki may not have a place in the cultural or historical map of Kerala. Much of the district still thrives on agriculture, mushroom cultivation, dairy farming etc. However, only few districts can beat the incredible beauty and virgin landscape of this mountainous town. There are areas unadulterated by human encroachment, which lie perpetually cloaked in mist and greenery throughout the year. Some of the areas here are perpetually dark due to the thickness of the forests enveloping them. The waters are pristine and crystal clear, and the only sounds those of the leaves.

The name ‘Idukki’ itself speaks about the geography of the place-it is derived from ‘Idukku’ which means ‘a narrow gorge.’ Set at an altitude of 2500-6700 feet, Idukki has many distinctions to its credit. It is the home of the highest peak in Kerala, Anamudi and also the spice capital of Kerala. It is also the originating point of several rivers- the Pampa, the Manimala etc. Idukki is also the major source of power for the whole state of Kerala.
